Mount Abu is a hill station in Aravalli Range in Rajasthan. It is very close to the border of Gujarat. A very distinct rocky plateau is formed because of this mountain that is 22km long and 9 km wide.
Guru Shikhar is the highest peak on this mountain. It is approximately 1,722 m i.e. 5,650 ft above the sea level. This peak is also famous as Oasis in the desert because the heights are home to rivers and lakes and even waterfalls. There are evergreen forests on this peak.
The only hill station in the entire Rajasthan is Mount Abu. Since it is located at the elevated height of 1220 m it offers an interesting retreat to many tourists. Not just people from Rajasthan and Gujarat but all over India love to travel to Mount Abu.
Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary:
Spreading out in the plateau the Mount Abu is 19 km in its length and 6 km in its breadth. The rocks are igneous because of the weather as well as the wind and water. This land is highly rich in its floral diversity. The sub – tropical thorny forests at the foot hills are appreciated for their presence at the evergreen forests. It is believed that there are 112 plant families in the forests.
In this wildlife sanctuary you would be able to observe a wide and beautiful variety of orchids. It is rich with plenty of floral species that is a visual treat in the land of dessert. To the south – west part of the sanctuary is rich in bamboo forests.
When it comes to animals the rarest and endangered species are found in this wildlife sanctuary. Lion and tiger for which the Mount Abu was famous were last reported in 1872 and 1970 respectively. Leopard is known to be the apex predator in recent times.
Other species found here would be the Jungle cat, Sambhar, Wolf, Indian Civet, Hyena, Indian fox, jackal, wild boar, pangolin, common langur, Indian hare, common mongoose, porcupine and hedgehog. This sanctuary also provides a comforting habitat to sloth bear.
Mount Abu is a mountain that offers home to various Hindu temples. This includes Adhar Devi Temple that is beautifully carved out of the solid rock. Then there is Shri Raghunathji Temple. Guru Shikhar peak has numerous Jain temples that have Dilwara Temples. These temples are complexly carved out of white marble. The oldest temple is the Vimal Vasahi temple. It was built in 1021 AD dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara.

Ideal time to Visit:
September to December and February to June is considered to be the best time to pay a visit to Mount Abu. It is advised to skip the monsoons.
